The Stony Brook Area

In 1655, Stony Brook was named for the brook that flows north into the harbor. Present-day Stony Brook owes much of its best features to philanthropist and businessman Ward Melville, who implemented his father’s vision to rebuild the town in the image of Williamsburg in 1938. He donated hundreds of acres of land for the good of the community: for Stony Brook University, the local high school that now bears his name, and park grounds and common areas. Stony Brook was also known for one of the first shopping centers on the North Shore, which is now run by the Ward Melville Heritage Organization. It encompasses many shops and dining options. An inviting village green overlooks the harbor. You can rent kayaks, boat at the Stony Brook Yacht club, and swim or walk your dog by Sand Street Beach.

There’s plenty to do here year-round: This area is resplendent with culture, offering a wide array of live music and art exhibits, along with Division I sports at the university, and top-notch medical facilities and university events and programs that are open to the community. The area offers many different types of neighborhoods. Some are known for their appeal to young families (such as the Strathmore Village section), some offer the unmatchable charm of the historic area—with homes built in the 1800s, and others (Stony Brook Shores) that provide public beach access to Stony Brook Creek, where you can swim and kayak at your leisure.
